A Brief History of Perfume: a glimpse at the smells we love

Everybody enjoys a good fragrance and almost everyone has their own signature scent. And you will never feel ready to go out if you miss your final spritz before walking out the door. But, do we actually know anything about fragrances? Sure, we know how to wear them, but do we know where they come from or the ingredients of our favorite scent?

Here we show a list of 5 interesting items to take into account when think about perfumes and colognes:

1. 1. The origin of the word perfume comes from “per fumum”. A latin word that literraly means “through smoke”.
2. 2. Fragrances were used to establish a connection with the gods in ancient Egypt. Which means people would literally use perfumes to talk to their gods. Only priests, the royal family and aristocrats had access to the world of perfumery.
3. 3. The first perfume made out of alcohol was created for Queen Elisabeth of Hungary by a priest. And since 1371 it was rumored that it was the fragrance itself which had kept the Queen looking as young all of her lifetime.
4. 4. We all have heard of Marie Anoinette. But did you know she was famous for her love of flowers? Her favorite fragrance was made of completely natural notes of rose, jasmine and orange blossoms among other scents.
5. 5. The fragrances we see today were developed when chemists learned to use molecules to create scents during the 19 ^th century.
