3 Steps to Properly Storing your Perfume

Posted on

Even though they are advertised as the magnanimous thing we believe they are, perfumes can lose its smell or go bad if it is stored under the wrong conditions. Decoloration and strange scents in your perfume are signs that your beloved perfume has gone awry. However, there are things you can do to store your perfume in order to prolong its life:

Properly Storing your Perfume

1.Find the Right Spot to Place your Perfume

Whatever place you decide to store your perfume at needs to be away from direct sun light as it may damage its bottle. Perfumes usually last longer if stored in darker places such as a closet or a drawer.

Another factor you need to keep in mind is that you should store your perfume in place with consistent temperature. Extremely high or low temperature may affect your perfume´s quality. The kitchen and the bathroom should definitely be off-limits, since they are bound to get hot when cooking or showering respectively.

Humid places are not the right place for a perfume. Humidity may have a negative effect on its quality so you should find dry places. This is another case against storing perfume in the bathroom.

A refrigerator might be a good place to store your perfume, this is only if it is not too cold. It might seem strange to look at perfumes so close to your food but the temperature is consistent and it is away from direct sunlight. However, if your food keeps usually freezing on your fridge it is a bad idea to store you perfume there. It might damage your perfume.

A closet is another great option as it usually complies with what we have mentioned above.

2.The Right Perfume Container

You should always try to keep your perfume on its original bottle. If you transfer it to another recipient, perfume will get in contact with air which may cause it to lose some of its smell.

You should your perfume´s bottle on its original or any other box as long as it is possible. Boxes will further protect perfumes from heat and direct sunlight. Before storing your perfume in a box, make sure its cap is not leaking.

Get yourself some travel containers. Choose travel friendly bottles, especially if you have to fly. They are a good idea since there´s always a chance of losing your perfume when traveling and nobody wants to lose the whole thing! Even though we mentioned not transferring perfume to another container it is always best if you need to travel.

3.Avoiding Damage

Always keep the cap on when storing your perfume. As you probably know now, the more exposed a perfume is to air the higher the chance it will lose its smell.

Some people shake their perfume bottles prior to using them, this is generally a bad idea as it may expose it to excess air. Avoid doing this at all costs.

Perfume applicators may work when used correctly, but if you don’t take care they might introduce bacteria and oils to the bottle.
